Sports Coaching Competencies Among the Secondary Schools of the Division of Kabankalan City

Abstract:

This study was conducted to determine the association between the sports-related factors on coaches’ coaching competency as perceived by the coaches and their athletes among the different public and private secondary schools of the division of Kabankalan City. The descriptive-survey research design which made used of a self-made questionnaire was employed to 30 teacher coaches and 151 randomly selected athletes for School Year 2017-2018. Frequency Count and Percentage Distribution, Mean, t-test, and ANOVA and person r were used for data analyses. Most of the coaches were aged 26-35 years old, males, and with units or already earned their masters’ degree. Majority of the coaches have 5 years and below coaching experience, coaching individual/dual sports in the regional competitions and have attended seminars, training and workshop. Most have not earned any national certifications and were MAPEH teachers. Coaches were very competent in coaching by self-assessment and were competent as perceived by their athletes. Coaches’ sex and educational attainment had significant differences in their coaching competency. There were significant differences among the levels of coaching attained and the obtained sports-related national certificates. There was no significant relationship among the aspects of coaching competencies as perceived by both the coaches and their athletes.
