The Untold Maguindanaon Folk Literature

Abstract:

The Collection and translation of Maguindanaon Folk Literature into English and Filipino languages are significantly important to localize, indigenize and contextualize culture via literature. Literature is a mirror of civilization which gives people a glance of the past, and meaningful and useful understanding of the society. This study aimed to gather the untold Maguindanaon folk literature and put them into written form. The study employed qualitative narrative research design to collect and analyze the untold Maguindanaon Folk Literature. The participants were the eight (8) native Maguindanaons specifically the four (4) Taw sa Laya and the other four (4) Taw sa Ilud who were identified using purposive sampling technique. The study retrieved and recorded 30 unrecorded Maguindanaon folk literature in genres such as folktales (tudtulan), proverbs (palibasan), idioms (bayok), folksongs (sengal) and riddles (paantukan). The analysis of the literary pieces revealed the following Maguindanaon values: right decision making, trustworthiness, generosity, wisdom, contentment, acceptance, tranquility, tolerance, loyalty, sincerity, modesty, courage, bravery, patriotism, freedom, sense of light, security, health, nature loving, faithfulness, forgiveness, trust, reverence and faith to Allah (S.W.T.). There have been existing potential Maguindanaon Folk literatures which are not yet recorded and published. Hence, there is a need to record and publish the existing Maguindanaon Folk literature which reflects rich values and is a potential reference of cultural identity. Moreover, the recorded literature can be served as rich source of instructional materials for the MTB-MLE curriculum.
