Sugar Sweetened Beverages: Factors Affecting Consumption and Level of Awareness on Its Effects to Health Among Nursing Students of Mindanao State University-Sulu

Abstract:

Sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) have become part of day to day diet of youth these days. Instead of drinking water most of the younger individuals opt to drink sugar sweetened beverages with meals or during snack. The study aimed to investigate factors affecting consumption of SSBs and level of awareness on its effects to the health among nursing student of Mindanao State University-Sulu, (n=75). The study will also determine the socio-demographic profile in terms of: age and sex, and commonly consumed sugar sweetened beverages among respondents. The study utilized quantitative inferential descriptive- predictive design and employed a self-structured survey questionnaire. Stratified random sampling was employed to determine respondents of the study. Majority of the respondents were young adolescents, 21-23 years of age, mostly were female. Factors affecting consumption of SSBs: 1) personal, 2) behavioural and 3) socio-environmental were all determined to “moderately affect consumption of sugar sweetened beverages”. Furthermore, respondents were “somewhat aware” of the effects of SSBs to health. It was determined that both sex and behavioural factors do not significantly affect the level of awareness of the respondent. However age, personal factors and socio-environmental factors found to significantly affect the level of awareness of the respondents.
