Parent Involvement in the Academic Performance of the High School Students in Mindanao State University, Sultan Naga Dimaporo

Abstract:

This study was undertaken to evaluate the extent of parent involvement in the academic performance of the high school students at Mindanao State University, Sultan Naga Dimaporo, Lanao del Norte. The descriptive method of research was used in this study to determine the extent of parent involvement in the academic activities of their children. 175 parents of high school students were the respondents to this study. Using the adapted and modified survey questionnaires of Torres (2002), the quantitative data revealed that, on the extent of parent involvement due to materials, such as financial support and other school stuff, parents were occasionally involved in providing materials to their children due to limited income. Also, parents were occasionally involved in the non-material support of the parents, such as time, attention, and others, due to their limited time caused by busy work. Moreover, parents were occasionally involved in academic-related and other school activities such as school affairs, programs, and meetings in school due to overloading work outside the home. Moreover, there was no significant difference in the extent of parent involvement in academic performance when they were grouped according to occupation and family size. However, there was a significant difference in the extent of parent involvement in academic performance due to educational qualifications. Which means that the parents who have higher educational attainment significantly influence the academic performance of the children. Therefore, parents should serve as role models to their children, find times to strengthen the parent child relationship, guide them to live a better life, and support their child in their academic endeavors so that the children become a future asset and good citizen in the country.
