Abstract:

This correlational descriptive study aimed to determine the mass media exposure and skills in the Filipino Language of the sixth-grade pupils in the elementary school in the First District of Buenavista, Guimaras, Philippines. The study participants were eighty-four (84) males and one hundred twenty-eight (128) females, with a total of two hundred twelve (212) pupils from nine schools in the first district of Buenavista. Pupils were grouped according to gender, grade in Filipino, and the type of media they were exposed to. A valid language test consisted of three components: correct word and phrase use, vocabulary, and reading comprehension, and a questionnaire about students was used to collect data. Overall, even when they were grouped according to gender, grade in Filipino, and type of media they were exposed to, the level of skills in the Filipino Language of pupils was high. There was no significant difference in the level of mass media exposure based on gender and grade in Filipino, but there was a significant difference as they grouped based on the type of media exposure. They are more exposed to television.
