Intramuros: Cradle of Saints and Martyrs

Jerry Degollacion Imbong

Discipline: History

Abstract:

This paper deals with a seemingly least explored topic about the Walled City: Martyrs and Saints. Numerous studies have been conducted about the history of Intramuros which highlights the political, economic, social, cultural and religious aspects but only a few have ventured into the lives of those holy men and women who once worked and lived in Intramuros. This research will focus on the religious significance of Intramuros, the concept of mission, especially during the colonial era, and the different men and women who had been assigned and had worked, and/or lived in Intramuros and who were later beatified or canonized by the Catholic Church. Hence, the last part of this research will primarily focus on a biographical sketch of Intramuros saints and martyrs. The walls of Intramuros are witnesses to the numerous holy men and women who dedicated their lives serving the sick, the poor and the lowly, and who committed to offer their lives in the service of the Gospel. Their story is a living proof that Intramuros is not only a cradle of heroes but also a sanctuary of saints and martyrs. This paper deals with a seemingly least explored topic about the Walled City: Martyrs and Saints.
