Abstract:

From November 2000 to June 2005, 283 purebred American Brahman calves were produced by artificial insemination (AI) using frozen semen from 10 American Brahman bulls on 138 ANSA Amihan cows at ANSA Genetics Inc. cattle farm in Lipa City, Batangas, Philippines. Registered with the American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA), the test sires (i.e., six ANSA Habagat bulls and four imported American Brahman AI sires) were compared based on individual progeny records in terms of sex and color of calf, birth weight, weaning weight, pre-weaning gain in weight, and pre-weaning average daily gain. The sex and color of calves were significantly related (P<0.01) to the test bull. “ANSA Crata 649/0" was noted to have mostly (60.87%) male progenies while "Union Ern Manso 154/4" produced mostly (68.42%) female offsprings. The ANSA Habagat sires, particularly "Didor Perator 108/6", Bozorator 606/5" and "Crata 649/0" were associated (P<0.01) with the production of red calves. Birth weight was adjusted for the significant effects (P<0.01) of sex of calf, gestation length, and weight of dam at birth. Weaning weight and pre-weaning gain in weight were each adjusted for the significant effects (P<0.01) of weaning age, weight of dam at weaning, and difference in weight of dam after birth and at weaning. Pre-weaning average daily gain was adjusted for the significant effects (P<0.01).of weight of dam at weaning, and difference in weight of dam after birth and at weaning. The test bull's place of birth and the number of calvings by the dam had no significant effect (P>0.05) on the sex and performance of American Brahman calves. Sample ranking among the test bulls recognized the top three proven sires (i.e. "Union Ern Manso 154/4", "IW's Rexcrata 392" and “ANSA Tomorrow 201/2") and identified the poorly rated bulls (i.e., “ANSA Maderator 403/6", “ANSA Crata 649/0" and "ANSA Bozorator 606/5'') to be culled immediately.
