INTELLECTUALIZING PHILIPPINE DISCOURSE ON TEACHING AND TEACHER DEVELOPMENT: A Review of the Joys of Teaching

Allan B. I. Bernardo

Discipline: Education

Abstract:

It seems to me that it would be unfair to undertake a scholarly review of a book that makes no pretense of being scholarly. Hence, I decided to write a review of such a book as a way of critiquing the whole enterprise of unscholarly and anti-intellectual writing on Philippine education. I strongly believe that one of the factors preventing meaningful reform of the Philippine educational system is the lack of a genuine scholarly discourse on Philippine education, and particularly on teaching. Thus, we should all be mindful of the deleterious effects of such forms of discourse.
