International Human Resource Management at a Crossroads of Meeting Challenges: Dissecting the Best Practices and Challenges in a Multinational Context

Mahmut Derindag

Abstract:

Human resource practitioners (HRPs) are confused on the distinction between international and domestic human resource management because of a similar process and dynamics that both have. However, the study of human resource management in a global context has been taken into consideration because of the processual conflict between international human resource management (IHRM) and domestic human resource management (DHRM). Considerably, the IHRM has passed through a transformative process from fction to the fact. This study was conducted to determine challenges, opportunities and the best practices of IHRM at the crossroads of globalization. It employed descriptive inferential design. Te research survey questionnaire was adopted and used from the questionnaire developed by Geringer, Frayne, and Milliman (2002). The descriptive method was used in describing the personal characteristics of the (HRPs), and the characteristics of the involved companies. On the other hand, the inferential method was utilized to see whether a significant interaction would surface between the independent and dependent variables of the study. Te results revealed that “Ethnic and cultural diversity” emerged the most challenging factor that HRPs are facing. Besides, “employee involvement and communication” was regarded as human resource (HR) best practice. Te study concludes that the HRPs need to become effective and efcient in handling various people with differing cultures. Te study recommends that every international frm should emphasize international human resource (IHR) challenges and the best practices in motivating employees to commit and dedicate to their work.
