ON PROVING DERIVATIVE FORMULA INVOLVING TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTION: REVISITATION OF THE CONCEPT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A LEARNING MODULE

Abstract:

Mathematics education is based on problem solving application of knowledge and manipulations. The students need to understand the procedures they employ are appropriate to solve problems and also to real life scenario. Thus, the trend of paying attention to teachers’ knowledge of mathematics topics and the nature of mathematics have been triggered in part by the need to improve the quality of teacher education. This study was intended to revisit the concept of derivative formula involving trigonometric function and to develop a learning module to help students understand and appreciate the importance of proving the derivative trigonometry and give a clear perception about derivation of trigonometric functions. This study employed the descriptive research design, specifically case study. There were a total of 20 student-respondents from the Computer Engineering course of the University of the Immaculate Conception, Davao City, Philippines. The data gathered were interpreted using the correlation analysis or the Pearson Product Moment-Correlation test. The results showed that the student respondents got higher scores in the test given after the intervention of the topic on derivative formulas. It implied that the intervention had a positive effect to the learners and the learners appreciated the importance and concept of the topic. Finally, there was a significant improvement of the respondents on proving derivative formula involving trigonometric function.
