Abstract:

The sun seems to beat earlier and heavier than usual, thought Billy as he inhaled smoke from the last stick of Hope cigarette in his pocket and from the exhaust of automobiles that passed him. He was hoping that a jeepney would pick him up soon before his kidneys burst and delay no longer his journey out of the town he had been calling hell.
