Revisiting ‘Asia(ns)’ in Computer-Mediated Communication Studies

Brian D Villaverde

Discipline: Communications

Abstract:

This paper delves into theses and dissertations conducted both in Western and Asian countries dealing with computer-mediated communication (CMC) and having Asia(ns) as variable in the selected studies. This sought to find out how ‘Asia(ns)’ is problematized in computer-mediated communication studies that are available in the ProQuest database. It surveyed the hypotheses, assumptions, purposes, and frameworks of the studies. It was found that themes such as economic, educational and social aspects are the main concerns in studies involving CMC where Asia and Asians are contextually and comparatively presented with respect to certain cultural lenses.
