Bullying and Coping Strategies Among First Year Nursing Students

Abstract:

The study was aimed to determine the bullying experiences and coping strategies of first-year nursing students in a private higher education institution. The correlational research design was used to establish the relationship between variables. Using purposive sampling, 75 out of 155 nursing students had prior experiences with bullying. Results showed that most participants experienced verbal harassment, then followed by social, physical, and cyber types. Students‟ positive and negative coping practices were also presented. Pearson r revealed no significant relationship between bullying and coping regarding physical, verbal, and social aspects, but had such between cyber and coping strategies. There was a significant difference between retaliating and self- calming coping according to age. A significant difference between giving up as coping and place of origin was also seen. The study recommended establishing seminars about the anti-bullying campaign. Parents and educational institutions could take part in support of overcoming bullying.
