CORRELATES OF ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ENGLISH OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL LEARNERS IN THE PROVINCE OF ILOILO

Abstract:

This descriptive research determined the correlates of academic performance in English of Junior High School Grade 7 struggling readers of Secondary Mother Schools in the Congressional District in the Province of Iloilo for Academic Year 2018-2019. It ascertained whether reading ability, reading comprehension and level of motivation were related with each other. This research used adapted instruments. Statistical tools employed were mean, standard deviations, one-way analysis of variance and the Pearson’s r. The significance level for all inferential tests was set at .05. Generally, the Grade 7 struggling readers had a “frustration” in their reading ability with no significant relationship in reading comprehension, level of motivation and academic performance. The respondents had “frustration” in reading comprehension with no significant relationship in academic performance, reading ability, and levels of motivation. The learners were “moderately low motivated” in their level of motivation with no significant relationship in academic performance, reading ability and reading comprehension. The learners’ academic performance is “fairly satisfactory” and obtained no significant relationship in reading ability, reading comprehension and level of motivation. However, reading comprehension is significantly related when grouped as to their reading ability, level of motivation and academic performance.
