The Relevance of Mechanical Drawing in the Digital Age

Rexmel S. Gacias | Diosdao J. Macapagal

Abstract:

The study explored the relevance of mechanical drawing in the midst of digital age where drawings are generated using computer aided design software. The study collected data through by interviewing three civil engineers, one geodetic engineer and two architects. All professionals who served as key informants in the study agreed that mechanical drawing is still relevant in the digital age since design process is iterative in nature, rendering mechanical drawing to be an integral part of the process. It helps develop in students the power to visualize. The study recommends that a separate study that measures the spatial intelligence of STM students using mental rotation or mental cutting tests be conducted to determine whether this aspect of human intelligence was developed because of mechanical drawing courses.
