Abstract:

One of the commitments of Colegio de San Juan de Letran Calamba (CSJLC) is sustained research and community extension culture; hence, the School of Education, Arts, and Sciences (SEAS) and the Community and Extension Services Department (CESD) conceptualized extension projects that were indeed responsive to the needs of the community. One of which was Tulay sa Pagbasa (TSP) of the Education Programs; thus, this study aimed to conduct impact evaluation on TSP, an extension project of the Education Programs from 2011 to 2016 when it was implemented at Tiyani Elementary School (TES). It was found out that (1) three stages were followed in the project implementation: planning, implementation, and evaluation; (2) there was a low level of participation/involvement among the faculty and students that affected the operation of the project; (3) no single beneficiary finished the 13 lessons of the Reading module; (4) TES administration and Reading teachers all agreed that TSP improved the reading skills of the beneficiaries even though none of them finished the module, their social skills and selfimage improved as well; and (5) TSP was sustained by the school by adopting its Reading module in their own remedial classes and in their daily lessons in Reading. The study recommended to further review the prescribed procedures of the project, strengthen the orientation program for volunteers, and coordinate properly with the Regional Department of Education Office. A project implementation framework which can be adopted in the future extension projects was also suggested.
