Responsible Netizenship in Blogposts of Baby Boomers and Generation Z on President Duterte’s War on Drugs

Anthon Rick G. Dela Cruz | Rai Erika B. Rimas

Abstract:

This research focused on identifying the manifestation of information literacy between the Baby boomers (born in the year 1946-1964) and Generation Z (born in the year 1996- 2010) in their respective blog and microblog posts. Specifically, this study aimed to: (1) describe and analyze the blogs centered on President Duterte’s ‘war on drugs’ in terms of information literacy; (2) compare the similarities and differences of the analyses of the blogs of the two generations; and (3) determine the implication of the blogs of the two generations to responsible netizenship. To seek answers to the questions, the researchers employed a content analysis under qualitative research design. Using Lau’s guideline in analyzing information literacy, the study identified the meaning, message, intention of words and graphics/photos used. These data were used to compare the two generations’ posts. The findings showed that Gen Zs tend to be more outspoken with their posts, compared to the Baby boomers who were more likely to be preserved, less attacking, and professional. Even though they had differences in terms of the characteristics of their posts, they suggested the same intention, the same message and the same meaning. The only difference the posts made was the way they were written or constructed by different generations. As a recommendation, the researchers encouraged the future researchers to focus on other social media platforms that were used for blogging and microblogging. It would be more engaging and interesting if all generations are evaluated using both quantitative and qualitative approaches.
