Assessment of Communication Skills of Grade 12 Senior High School Students of Letran-Calamba: Basis for College Preparedness

Abstract:

This study assessed the communication skills of Letran-Calamba Grade 12 Senior High School students in terms of their oral skills as basis for college preparedness. The researchers used the stratified random sampling technique in selecting its respondents. Pertinent data were gathered through Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and findings revealed that Grade 12 Senior High School student-respondents are college-prepared in terms of their communication skills in the aspects of: a) content, b) oral communication, c) development, and d) behavioral both in English and Filipino. However, some of the student respondents had difficulty putting their thoughts into words. Their answers contained incomplete ideas, and they resorted to code-switching (“Tag-lish”) whenever they could not express their thoughts in straight English. Hence, the researchers recommended the “EOP” (“English Only Policy”) among the SHS G12 students to strengthen their confidence in the use of English as their second language, next to their mother tongue and to conduct trainings and forums to improve their communications skills in Senior High School Department especially on English language.
