Smart Wellness Machine: Health Parameters Measurement System with Dietary Plans and Progress Graphs

Abstract:

Cases of obesity have been increasing over the years in the Philippines. One of the factors that has had the most impact and that contributes to obesity is inappropriate dietary habits sustained throughout the years, which include frequent consumption of products from fast food chains and likewise low levels of physical movement, both of which can pose a risk to person's wellbeing due to heavy workload and a fast-paced lifestyle. On the other hand, health conscious people tend to go through different assessment methods such as Skin Calipers, Hydrostatic Weighing, Dual-Energy X - Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), and more. As the years go by a new method called the Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) has become popular. Aside from physical activity and exercise, maintaining a proper diet is also important in improving the overall well-being of an individual. This design project aimed to help nutritionists and patients by providing their measured body composition parameters and creating a customized diet plan based on their weight, height, and body composition parameters. It uses the concept of BIA together with ultrasonic height sensors in order to get the weight, height, and body composition parameters which are necessary in formulating a diet plan. Aside from that, the project features a progress graph that will be both displayed and printed. This design project utilized survey and interviews to gather the necessary data as well as validate the output. At the end of the study, the researchers were able to achieve the objectives set such as obtaining the health parameters with the use of validated and approved formulas. The method used in obtaining the BMI and calorie intake per day was also proven reliable by comparing their measured values to traditional measuring tools. The researchers were also able to formulate a dietary plan with the aid of a nutritionist and wellness coach with the additional help of FNRI approved resources. Finally, a progress graph which shows previous and present measurements was included in the features. Therefore, the Smart Wellness Machine was found to be reliable.
