The Nursing Profession as a Career Choice among Selected Senior High Students of Letran Calamba

Marjorie Anne R. Alcantara | John Rimar V. Esguerra

Abstract:

The study determined the perceptions of the respondents toward the nursing program as their future career choice, the factors that influence the senior high students in considering the nursing program, and the marketing strategies employed to help promote the nursing program in Letran. The research was conducted from November 2016 to September 2017 at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran - Calamba. Using the results of their aptitude tests conducted by the Guidance Office, the researchers identified 18 student-respondents who were likely to enroll in the program. Frequency, mean, and percentage were used to analyze the survey results. The study revealed that the respondents’ perceptions were attributed to their knowledge on the nature of the program/profession of nursing and trends and opportunities of the nursing profession. There were also other factors that influence their decision to consider the nursing program as their career choice. Hence, the researchers recommended the following: (1) program orientation towards the nursing program; (2) nursing procedure demonstrations to show students the “ropes”; (3) laboratory tours to increase students’ knowledge on how the nurses work inside the hospitals, (4) seminars for parents to broaden their perception toward the nursing program, and (5) more seminars for nursing students to participate into as a way of promoting Letran’s nursing program.
