The Perceived Changes, Prospects and Challenges of Community Based Tourism in Barangay Bukal, Majayjay, Laguna

Abstract:

The study focused on the perceived changes, prospects and challenges of the community-based tourism in Barangay Bukal, Majayjay, Laguna. Bukal falls has the potential to emerge as a well-known tourist destination; hence, this study aimed to find out how this could affect the residents in the local community. Descriptive research design was used by the researchers in order to accurately describe of the characteristics of individual situation or group and the frequency with which the phenomenon occurs in natural setting without imposing any control or manipulation (Anastas, 1999). Personal interviews were conducted to describe the data set in rich detail and interpret various aspects of the research. The findings of the study showed that there were positive and negative effects on the community when Bukal Falls became known as a tourist destination. In terms of behavior, the residents became more cooperative in community programs and other activities and they got along well with other people. In terms of lifestyle, the farmers worked as tour guide as well. On physical infrastructure, there were establishments built, and some were renovated. In terms of safety and security, most cases were caused by both the tourists and management negligence. The influx of visitors gave additional income to residents. To improve the current practices in the community, the researchers recommended that a more organized management on safety and security must be established. The residents must be actively involved in community programs and other tourism-related activities.
