Abstract:

This paper describes a design for a rudimentary electro-mechanical ventilator utilizing a bag-valve-mask and a system for automatic actuation of the same. The study aimed to create a design for a rapid manufacture BVM-based ventilator Methodology: A design was created using 3D modelling software and was created using readily available materials that were purchased locally and assembled. Evaluation was performed using a Fluke VT650 Gas Flow Analyzer to establish the relationship between motor actuation and air low and pressure. Results: In terms of volume, the prototype was capable of outputs between 7.8mL and 300mL. In terms of airflow, the prototype was capable of Q values between 20 and less than 60. Recommendations were made to improve the design. Conclusion: A rudimentary design is submitted as a proof of concept of a BVM-based Arduino-controlled Mechanical Ventilator.
