The Relationship Between Mathematics Anxiety and Classroom Environment

Abstract:

Two hundred seventeen (217) Grade 7 students from Parang High School SY 2015-2016 in Marikina City participated in this study which investigated the relationship between mathematics anxiety and classroom environment. The researchers administered a 12-item Math Anxiety questionnaire and a 48-item Classroom Environment survey which was divided into three (3) categories: Self-Efficacy, Classmates, and Teachers. This is to specifically determine which aspect in the classroom environment affects students in learning mathematics anxiety. Scores were analyzed using Pearson Chi-square. Results showed that there is a significant relationship between mathematics anxiety and the classroom environment in classmates support category (r=.000). This indicated that a tendency for students having unsupportive classmates to have higher levels of mathematics anxiety.
