Success Stories of National Qualifying Examination for School Heads (NQESH) Passers: A Narratology

Elmervin Ibanez | Mervin Salmon

Discipline: Teacher Training

Abstract:

The purpose of this narratological research was to explore the success stories of the persistent taker, the knowledgeable taker, the religious taker, and the experienced taker in the National Qualifying Examination for School Heads (NQESH). This study was seen through the lens of the Iceberg Theory of Success proposed by Mueller (2020), which emphasizes that every successful individual exerts a considerable amount of determination and hard work before achieving their dreams. Additionally, the study considered Carlyle and Galton's Trait Theory of Leadership, which underscores those inherent qualities and characteristics, such as personality, physical traits, and intellectual traits, that contribute to making someone a leader. Moreover, the study was gleaned from the Attribution Theory of Weiner (1985) which places strong emphasis on how a person's thoughts and behavior significantly impact their level of success. The study utilized thematic analysis in analyzing the data. The accounts of the participants revealed that they successfully navigated the National Qualifying Examination for School Heads by demonstrating persistence in testtaking, engaging in a review center, focusing extensively on Educational Law literature, embracing a flexible study routine, undergoing a thorough review process, intensive reading of review materials, engaging in experiential learning through peer discussions, employing visual and pronunciation learning strategies, applying critical thinking in selecting answers, efficiently managing time during the test, and displaying unwavering perseverance. Anticipated challenges have come to pass, which stemmed from the intricate interplay of personal, social, and environmental factors. Thus, to overcome their challenges, they employed coping mechanisms that centered on well-being, personal development, and the presence of supportive network systems. More importantly, the study bared the insights of NQESH passers, wherein they recognized the significance of persistence, adopting a comprehensive and well-rounded approach to improve preparedness, cultivating a habit of thorough and advanced studying, valuing resilience, demonstrating confidence in exam authorities and procedures, upholding a positive outlook on life, regarding NQESH as a pathway to progress and a measure of readiness, and the significance of prioritizing legal and administrative knowledge. The results indicated that success is not attainable through shortcuts. Every person must confront the inevitable challenges that time brings on the journey to achieving their ultimate goals. The key components of this strategy are always giving it our all, working hard to achieve our goals, trusting in a higher power for direction, and remaining optimistic about our ability to succeed.
