Parental Involvement in the Reading Competence and Academic Performance of Third Graders: Basis for a Remediation Program
Arlene Cañete
Discipline: Education
Abstract:
Parents are big part of the success of the learners especially so when we talk about reading competence. Its involvement
would require time and effort as in controlling, motivating, monitoring, and providing. This study aims to determine
the extent of parental involvement in the reading competence of the third graders at Sta.Cruz, Bagong Nayon 1 and
Peace Village Elementary School in Antipolo City. Interviews, literature reviews as well as survey questionnaires
were utilized to gather pertinent data. Weighted mean and t-test were used to treat the gathered data. Results revealed
that the extent of parental involvement in controlling, motivating, monitoring, and providing are found to be less
involved in the reading competence. There is a significant difference between the extent of parental involvement in
the reading competence of the Grade 3 learners. However, there is no significant relationship between the extent of
parental involvement in the reading competence of Grade 3 pupils and their academic performance in English. This
study concludes that the parental involvement in reading competence whether very highly involved or less involved
has no effect on the academic performance of the grade 3 learners.
