[MATH]Learning Level in Geometrical Proving of Education Students in a State University

Abstract:

Proving has been considered by many university students as one of the most difficult subject matter in studying mathematics. They considered it as the most disliked and hated mathematical classroom activity at all times. In Southern Leyte Sate University – Tomas Oppus, same problem was experienced by education students enrolled in geometry. To help the institution address this problem, this descriptive study measured the learning performance, learning level, and learning difficulties in proving geometrical proposition of education students enrolled in the said university. Descriptive analysis of the data gathered from education students enrolled in geometry class disclosed that education students of Southern Leyte State University – Tomas Oppus performed at “below average” level in proving geometrical proposition. Furthermore, this study revealed some inconsistencies between the students’ belief and their actual performance in relation to Van Hiele’s Learning Level in Geometrical Proving. They believed that they reached the highest level of Van Hiele’s Geometrical Thought though their actual performance showed that they were stuck on the level of “Analysis”. Concluding that students poorly performed proving geometrical propositions, it was recommended that proving should be an integral part in any classroom discussion to enhance students’ particular skills on recognition, analysis, order, deduction and rigor
