Abstract:

Mathematics is a battle for the majority of the Filipinos. The study aimed to design a prediction model involving mathematical skills, reading comprehension, love of mathematics, mathematics anxiety, mathematics study habits and teacher competency for a performance of students in freshmen mathematics. The descriptive – prediction method of research was used to define the relationship of the achievement test result in word problems and the different factors used in the study. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed in deciding the best model to predict the performance of students in freshmen mathematics. Findings revealed that 45% of the variability in the achievement test result of the students is explained by the USEPAT math score result, HS math grade, love of mathematics, teacher’s commitment, teacher’s knowledge of the subject matter and teacher’s teaching for independent learning. The result of the prediction model showed that higher levels of USEPAT math score, love of mathematics and teacher’s commitment were associated with higher achievement test result. However, a negative association between the remaining predictive variables and the achievement test result was found. Students’ love of mathematics must also be considered on the admission in the course, and HS math evaluation should be given lesser weight.
