Grice’s Maxims of Conversation on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda

Aris Joy Porquiado | Maria Vinice O. Sumaljag

Discipline: Education

Abstract:

The purpose of this study aimed to determine and analyze the implicatures of the adherence and violations to Grice’s Maxims of Conversation on the talk show, Fast Talk with Boy Abunda. Conversation analysis was used in this qualitative study. Conversation analysis is a qualitative research method that looks at how individuals interact and communicate through language and body language to understand how they achieve social goals including building connections, exchanging information, or settling disputes (Politz, 2024). Additionally, Hutchby and Wooffitt (2008) defined Conversation Analysis as a methodical examination of speech and interaction generated in everyday contexts and situations. By doing so, the study investigates the ways in which maxims are either adhered to or violated, as well as how these behaviors affect the conversation's overall meaning and pragmatics. Results revealed that the program's conversations both adhered and violated the maxims, and implicatures are essential for deciphering the underlying meanings and context of the exchanges. The study of the implicatures resulting from the adherence to and violations of Grice's Maxims of Conversation in the talk show Fast Talk with Boy Abunda has several implications for understanding conversational dynamics and communication strategies because these pragmatic implications are necessary for the audience to fully understand the intended messages and the subtleties of the spoken exchanges. Our understanding of conversational implicature—meanings deduced from context rather than explicit statements—is expanded by this work. By analyzing how speakers adhere to or violate the maxims, the study demonstrated how implicatures can be intentionally or unintentionally produced, which affects audience interpretation and engagement (Hodgson, 2022). Lastly, this research advances theoretical viewpoints on conversational implicature and maxims while also offering insightful information about social interactions, media dynamics, and effective communication techniques in modern discourse.
