AI in Education: A Systematic Review of its Applications, Benefits, and Ethical Challenges

Jig J. Boncillo

Abstract:

This systematic review is intended to analyze the applications, benefits, and ethical challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. The study evaluated 20 peer-reviewed studies published between 2021 and 2025 and accessed from databases like Academia.edu, ERIC, and Google Scholar. The review findings revealed that AI is being used to enable personalized learning, enhance pedagogical skills, and automatic assessment. With regard to its benefits, it was showed that AI enables continuous professional development of teachers and data-driven teaching. However, the review also revealed challenges, such as poor infrastructure, technical skill gaps, and ethical concerns, especially regarding students’ data privacy and algorithmic bias. In conclusion, AI has big potential to enhance education, but careful attention to these challenges is essential to ensuring effective, efficient and ethical use of AI in education.
