Abstract:

This study focuses on a specific architectural typology – the apartment dwelling — which proliferated in urban Manila and its arrabales or suburbs in the 19th century. While it tries to define and differentiate and or compare these types from and with each other, it also locates the accesoria, and its little known variants specifically the vivienda and poseción (posesíon) within the social structure of 19th century Manila and the history of urban development and architecture in the city.
