Discipline: Education
Abstract:
Pioneer teachers in extension schools play an important yet underexplored role, facing challenges in setting up schools in areas with limited resources, where they must manage both teaching and community-building. This study delved into the lived experiences of pioneer teachers, their challenges, and their insights being a pioneer in an extension school. The researcher adopted the qualitative phenomenological research design to interview the 20 conversational partners using the Interview Guide. The researcher interviewed the pioneer teachers about their lived experiences, and the conversations were audio-recorded. Then, the data were analyzed using phenomenological explications and thematic analysis. Pioneer teachers shared viewpoints and unique challenges they encountered while helping establish the extension school. The struggles they face, such as managing multi-grade classrooms, limited resources, and overwhelming demands of their roles, are challenging. These struggles make emotional and professional support crucial. Their deep connection to students and communities keeps them going. For many, teaching is more than just academics for they also become mentors, helping students through personal and socio-economic challenges. Their resilience and sense of purpose help them push through tough times, and collaborating with the community and other teachers gives them the support and resources they need. This study reveals the vital role of real-life encounters, adaptive strategies, and experiential understanding in the success of pioneer teachers in extension schools, underscoring the need for ongoing support and resource allocation.
