Abstract:

The Philippines has a significant number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). As of 2020, approximately 1.77 million Filipinos were employed abroad. Given the prevalence of father-child separation due to overseas employment, it becomes important to understand how these family dynamics influence children's interpersonal development, particularly in romantic contexts. The study investigated the effect of the relationship between daughters and their OFW fathers on the daughters' romantic relationships with men. It also determined whether the demographic profile of the daughter is correlated with the variables in the study. The researchers used purposive sampling to gather the respondents needed for the study. Female respondents aged 18-25 in Region IV-A (N = 96) were gathered. They were tasked to answer two questionnaires: a revised version of IPPA (Father Form) and STLS, to determine the quality of their father-daughter relationship and the quality of their romantic relationship. Results from linear regression analysis showed that the quality of the father-daughter relationship predicts the daughter's romantic relationship. There is a high chance for daughters with a positive relationship with their fathers to maintain a positive romantic relationship with men, and vice versa. In addition, through Pearson's R correlation analysis, it has been proven that there is no significant relationship between the daughters' demographics to the quality of their relationship with their father. However, a significant relationship exists between daughters' demographics, specifically with the usual length of the romantic relationship, the length of the father's stay in the country, and the quality of daughters' romantic relationship.
