Abstract:

This study aimed to examine the influence of culturally shaped parental engagement on the academic performance of senior high school students in Alfonso Lista, Ifugao. It measured the extent of parental engagement based on Ifugao cultural values in five domains: academic support, emotional and moral guidance, participation in school activities, home-based support, and Ifugao cultural promotion and influence. A descriptive correlational research design was employed to analyze the relationship between parental engagement and student performance. The study was conducted at Sta. Maria National High School–Senior High School, the largest secondary school in Ifugao, with respondents representing Ayangan Ifugao learners. Data were collected using a researcher-modified questionnaire adapted from Albiso et al. (2022). Results showed that Ayangan's parents experienced financial constraints and varied levels of educational attainment. Students perceived a moderate level of parental engagement, with cultural promotion obtaining the highest mean score among the five domains. Analysis of academic records indicated that students performed at satisfactory to high proficiency levels. However, Spearman's rho correlation analysis revealed no significant relationship between the extent of parental engagement and academic performance, with p values exceeding the .05 level of significance. These findings suggest that parental engagement, while important for cultural identity and socioemotional development, does not directly predict academic performance. The study recommended culturally responsive school community programs that enhance parental participation and support holistic student development.
