Discipline: Teacher Training

Abstract:

Mentorship plays a critical role in nursing education by fostering professional development, enhancing job satisfaction, and promoting retention among nursing educators and students. Despite its recognized importance, mentoring relationships in nursing education are often challenged by workload demands, role strain, work–life imbalance, and limited institutional support issues that are particularly salient in the Philippine context, where nursing educators face increasing academic and clinical responsibilities. This study was conducted to examine the mentoring styles, mentoring problems, and coping strategies of nursing educators in Santiago City, Philippines. Total enumeration sampling was used in the study. It involved seventy-seven (77) full-time and part-time nurse educators as respondents. Data were analyzed using frequency and mean. The nursing educators employed various mentoring styles, including Letting Go, Active Listening, Advising, Prescribing, and Cooperation. Active Listening was identified as the most commonly used approach, while Prescribing was the least used. The results indicate that nursing educators in Santiago City favored a mentoring style that focused on empowering mentees to tackle their challenges. This collaborative method involved providing guidance based on the educators' expertise and experience rather than imposing solutions on mentees. The interface between home and work emerged as a significant challenge for the nursing educators in Santiago City. While they expressed satisfaction with their work environment and relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, it was noted that work-related factors negatively influenced their well-being. Recommendations include that nursing educators should continue to utilize a variety of mentoring styles, particularly the active listening approach, as it encourages mentees to independently address challenges with appropriate guidance and fosters collaboration in problem-solving. The predominant coping strategies of the nurse educators include prayer and faith, resilience derived from peer groups, perseverance, and professional affirmation. The College of Nursing administrators should strive to maintain a supportive work environment and promote positive relationships among colleagues and stakeholders. Furthermore, it is recommended that the administration review the workload of nursing educators, considering its impact on their health and well-being. The implementation of a mentoring framework program is suggested to enhance mentoring styles and address the challenges faced by nurse educators.
