Abstract:

Rising incidents of independent living among the elderly in the Philippines were a direct consequence of an aging population. However, agefriendly environment initiatives were challenged by the diversity of experiences of those elderly living independently, suggesting that understanding of these local experiences was imperative for a successful program. This study explored and contextualized Henri Lefebvre’s three social dimensions of spaces among fifteen older persons living alone using a qualitative case study design. Data from participants’ in-depth (with photoelicitation technique) and key informant interviews were analyzed using a three-level coding thematic analysis. Themes that emerged indicated that perceived spaces have become spaces for survival. Evident in this were the various survival practices in their single-room living space, as well as their engagement in backyard industries, active use of private outdoor spaces, and passive use of public outdoor spaces. On the other hand, their lived spaces were known to be shaped by economic underprivilege brought about by factors such as their strained relationship with family members, their chronic health condition, and the inadequacy of social pension. This is further seen in the connectivity and sentimentality attached to their living space. Relational embeddedness manifests in mutual help. Conceived spaces were shaped by the mismatch between institutional priorities and lived needs. This is reflected in themes such as the government’s lack of financial support for those living independently and its prioritization of accessibility and entertainment. Furthermore, the absence of a proper assessment tool resulted in unreported incidents of elderly abandonment and abuse. The study's results highlighted the tension among the three social dimensions of spaces, emphasizing the need for inclusive programs that address the unique situation of the elderly who live independently.
