Studies of the Effects of Nutritional Iron-Deficiency Anemia on Glucose Metabolism in Rats

Francisco M. Strebel Jr | Manuel P. Macapinlac

Abstract:

The Effect of iron-deficiency anemia on glucose metabolism in albino rats of the Sprague-dawley strain were examined. Fasting of animals followed by an oral dose of glucose and mesurement of the rate glucose absorption showed no notable differences among groups. Glucose tolerance test was done on anemic, pair-fed and control rats using Nelson-Somogyi method of glucose analysis. The Glucose telerance patterns of anemic rats definitely showed abnormally higher glucose levels. Glucosuria was not observed. However, there was more glycogen in the livers of anemic rats
