Parental Support And Its Influence On The Health-Seeking Behaviors Of Young Adults In Urban Communities

Abstract:

Parental involvement, plays a critical role in shaping the health trajectories of individuals transitioning into adulthood. This study investigated the impact of parental support on the health-seeking behaviors of young adults in urban communities, specifically across the domains of health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. Grounded in Vygotsky’s Socio-Cultural Theory, the researchers employed a quantitive-descriptive design to examine these dynamics. The team utilized a researcher-developed 5-point Likert scale questionnaire to collect data from 377 young adults, aged 18 to 25 across three urban barangays in Zamboanga City. Using stratified random sampling, the study analyzed the data to determine mean scores and correlations between variables. The findings revealed that respondents perceive a high level of parental support across all health aspects. Health promotion yielded the highest mean, suggesting that parents actively encourage proper hygiene, balanced diet, and adequate rest. While disease prevention and treatment also scored high, reflecting parental efforts to discourage risky behaviors and provide home care, rehabilitation received slightly lower scores, indicating a variance in support during recovery phases. Furthermore, a significant correlation exists between socio-economic status and perceived support; respondents from higher-income households reported greater access to health resources and more consistent parental guidance. In conclusion, parental support remains a pivotal factor in the health-seeking behaviors of young adults. The study recommends that community health programs integrate family-centered approaches to bolster support systems, particularly for lower-income households, and long-term rehabilitative care.
