Promoting Ethical Use Of Artificial Intelligence In Academic Work

Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, particularly generative AI platforms such as
ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot, have rapidly transformed the landscape of
higher education in the Philippines. Recent surveys indicate that
approximately 83% of Filipino college students utilize generative AI for
research and writing tasks, while 63% employ these tools for text
generation. Despite the increasing adoption of AI technologies in academic
settings, many higher education institutions, including iACADEMY, have yet
to establish a comprehensive and institution-wide policy governing their use
in academic work. This policy brief argues for the urgent development and
implementation of clear, integrated guidelines on AI use at iACADEMY. In
the absence of formal policies, students and faculty are left to
independently navigate both the opportunities and challenges presented by
AI technologies, including concerns related to academic integrity, the
potential erosion of critical thinking skills, and data privacy risks. Drawing
on existing policies and best practices from leading Philippine universities,
this brief proposes three actionable recommendations to support the
creation of a framework that promotes the responsible, ethical, and
educationally meaningful integration of AI within the institution.
