Enhancing Nursing Education Through Technological, Pedagogical Content Knowledge (Tpack) Competencies Among Nurse Educators

Abstract:
There is growing importance of technology integration for improving pedagogy delivery, faculty capabilities and student learning results in nursing education. This research investigated the Technological, Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) skills of nurse educators in nursing education. A mixed-method research approach using Likert-scale survey questionnaires and interview questions were used for this study. Participants were nurse educators and data were obtained by questionnaires and interviews. The quantitative data were subjected to statistical analyses, and the qualitative data were analyzed by using Strauss and Corbin’s thematic analyses. Results showed that nurse educators had a Very High TPACK competency. Moreover, there was no statistically significant difference in the level of TPACK competencies when the respondents were classified according to any of the profile variables and no significant correlation was found between the length of teaching experience and the TPACK level. Qualitative findings yielded four themes: Age-related Resistance to TPACK Integration, Evolving Pedagogical Practice Facilitates TPACK Integration in Nursing Education, Balance and Intentional Use of Technology in Teaching and Learning, and Transforming Traditional Teaching through Technology and Attitude. This study supports the development of nurse educator's professional identity, quality of instruction, and students' learning as positive outcomes of technology integration in nursing education. The results reinforce the need to increase efforts in curriculum development, faculty development and technological resources in order to further develop the TPACK skills of nurse educators. In addition, using technology in clinical processes and workflows and in evidence waiting practice can lead to better patient care outcomes and increased technology competence for the nursing workforce. The findings also underscore the importance of ongoing strategic planning at the administration level through curriculum reviews, faculty training, and technological support services. In conclusion, the conduct of further research is promoted in the aim of enhancing evidence based educational practices, contributing to the development of nursing education and facilitating continuous advancement in teaching and learning outcomes.
