Adoption of Extended Reality in Higher Education and Technical Vocational Education and Training Programs

Lou Simon M. Catimbang

Discipline: Education

Abstract:

This paper examines the adoption of Extended Reality (XR) technologies, including Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR), in higher education and Technical Vocational Education and Training Programs. XR technologies hold promise for providing immersive and interactive experiences, enhancing productivity, safety, and cost-effectiveness across various industries. A systematic review and bibliometric analysis were conducted on relevant research articles and conference papers from the Scopus database, published between 1969 and April 16, 2023. Keywords like “extended reality”, “virtual reality”, “augmented reality”, “mixed reality”, and “education” were used in the search. The analysis revealed an upward trend in research on XR education, with a sharp increase in publications over recent years. The study also indicated that XR technologies have been adopted in the higher education sector in the Philippines, providing students with immersive and engaging learning opportunities. However, the adoption of XR in Philippine education faces challenges, including underfunding and outdated curricula. As XR technologies evolve and become more accessible, they are likely to form an integral part of educational methodologies in the future. Policymakers, academic institutions, and stakeholders must invest in XR technologies and incorporate them into educational practices to bridge the industry-education skill gap.
