Abstract:
Oral cancer remains as one of the most significant diseases in the field of dentistry where early detection and diagnosis play critical roles in determining the survival of the patient. The dental practitioner's knowledge of the clinical presentation and risk factors associated with oral cancer, along with their ability to properly conduct an oral cancer examination and other related procedures allows provision of exceptional patient care. The study aimed to assess the oral cancer awareness and practices of dentists relative to oral cancer, and to determine whether there is a statistically significant difference in their awareness and practices according to their demographic profile. The participants involved 114 registered practicing dentists who graduated from Lyceum of the Philippines University - Batangas, to whom the three-part questionnaire was administered. Awareness on clinical presentation of oral cancer and oral cancer practices were assessed using weighted mean, while associated risk factors were evaluated in frequency and percentage.
Majority of the respondents demonstrated satisfactory awareness relative to their level of awareness with regard to oral cancer presentation. Regarding their oral cancer practices that involve techniques or procedures employed during oral cancer screening, results showed that dentists perfonn them sometimes, can be interpreted as an agreeable result. Simultaneously, the oral cancer awareness and practices of dentists showed no statistically significant difference based on demographic profile. The plan of action proposed consisted of strategies for the improvement of oral cancer awareness and practices of dentists that may meaningfully create an impact in their clinical practice.
