Abstract:

Stenography is an essential skill in office administration as it supports efficient note taking, transcription, and accurate documentation of spoken information. This study determined the cognitive, psychomotor, affective, and environmental determinants of stenography proficiency among 94 second-year Bachelor of Science in Office Administration students enrolled in Steno 2B at Quirino State University–Diffun Campus during the Academic Year 2025–2026. Using a quantitative descriptive-correlational design, data were collected through a researcher-made questionnaire and a Dictation–Simulation Stenography Test and analyzed using weighted mean, Pearson correlation, and stepwise regression analysis. The findings revealed poor proficiency in shorthand writing and dictation-taking skills and transcription accuracy. Listening ability, motivation, attitude, teaching methods, and learning resources were rated high, while mastery of stenography theories, writing speed, and writing fluency were poor. Mastery of stenography theories, writing speed, and writing fluency showed significant positive relationships with stenography proficiency. Regression analysis identified these variables as significant predictors, with shorthand writing speed emerging as the sole predictor of transcription accuracy. The study recommends strengthening theory instruction and providing regular speed and fluency practice to improve students' stenography proficiency.
