Abstract:

This descriptive correlational study determines the professional competency in nursing instruction and practice. The key areas of responsibility and core competencies of the standards for nursing practice in the Philippines were utilized to establish the extent of provision in the curriculum, level of instructions in the components of the educational process, extent of performance in the clinical area, and difference in terms of provision and performance. Purposive cluster sampling technique identified 91 staff nurses from San Pedro Hospital and Brokenshire Hospital, 156 clinical instructors and 497 student nurses from San Pedro College and Brokenshire College as respondents of the study. Results reveal a very good extent of provision in the nursing curriculum on safe and quality nursing care, management of resources and environment, legal responsibility, ethico-moral responsibility, personal and professional responsibility, quality improvement, research, records management, communication, and collaboration and teamwork. Findings suggest a systems design to improve the quality of nursing education.
