Abstract:

In today's Eucharistic celebration the focus of our reflection is the 25th year of Brother Gabriel Connon's arrival in the Philippines as a missionary. The very paradox of suffering and joy, of death and resurrection that is the theme of every liturgical celebration is appropriate for an occasion such as this. For we are gathered to extol someone whose very life is one of humility; to heap laurels upon a person dedicated to avoiding such honors. We are told, for example, of Brother's achievements in the field of education, in the opening of seven institutions called la Salle schools in various regions in the Philippines, of the many honors conferred upon him through the years. Research in various newspapers and publications will reveal to us further contributions and accomplishments in his work with and among religious and professional organizations, as well as the realization of his desire to become a citizen of this country.
