The Role of the Humanities in the Professional Courses

Samuel R. Wiley

Discipline: Education, Cultural Studies

Abstract:

The subject of this paper lends itself quite naturally to many possible avenues of development. If the author were a philosopher, or a writer, or a poet, his approach might be quite different. However, this article adopts a pragmatic approach. It begins with an objective look at the trimestral programs as now being carried out in the Colleges of Engineering and Commerce. There follows a short summary of the objectives of all humane studies in general. After that an approach will be made to the question of how to insert these objectives or better accomplish them within the limits of the present programs. The main purpose of this paper is not to propose facile answers to a rather knotty problem, but rather to simulate discussion within the faculty so that hopefully it may be possible to ask the right questions.
