The Art of Living in a Nihilistic Age

Wolf Dietrich

Discipline: Humanities

Abstract:

Nihilism is the feeling or the comprehension that the values that have heretofore shaped our existence are being devalued, that what heretofore was thought to have been the purpose of our lives is being discredited. In the optics of those values, the world suddenly does not make sense anymore. It seems out of focus; our vision of the future is blurred. We ask ourselves how we can go on living when our strengths have turned out to be weaknesses, when our aspirations have turned into illusions. We want to know what alternative there is to resignation and designation.
