The Essence of a La Sallian Education

Brother Edward Baldwin

Discipline: Education

Abstract:

There is an oft-quoted maxim within church circles, although quite obviously out-of-fashion these days, which proclaims that "It's not the habit that makes the monk." By paraphrasing the proverb slightly, we can employ its wisdom in approaching our present theme by remarking that a truly La Sallian education is not achieved by merely posting the name "LA SALLE" over the portals of the institution. Nor does it suffice to erect a statue of the Founder, recite invocations to him, or honor him on his annual feast day. These external signs are helpful as reminders and indicators of the La Sallian heritage, but they cannot substitute for the internal, spiritual values which are the essence of a truly La Sallian education.
