Reconstructing the Succession of Secular Parish Priests in Spanish Colonial Cavite

Regalado Trota Jose

Discipline: Religion, Philippine History

Abstract:

Cavite’s secular clergy is best exemplified by Padre Mariano Gomes, the oldest of the three martyred priests known as Goburza. Though Padre Gomes is ensconced in Philippine history for his nationalist activities, little else is known about him, let alone his efforts at improving his parish church in Bacoor. This paper will present a preliminary listing of Cavite’s secular parish priests and coadjutors during the Spanish colonial period. Thus provided with a “skeleton,’ ‘fleshy’ data will be added regarding the little-known artistic achievements of Padre Gomes and his colleagues among the secular clergy.
