A Historical Reconstruction of the Juramentado/Sabllallah Ritual

Isagani R. Medina

Abstract:

One of the most interesting yet misunderstood aspects in the history of Muslims in the Philippines is the institution known as juramentado among the Christian Filipinos and sabilallah among the Moros. Through the years, since its first inception in the 1870s in the Philippines, it had assumed a meaning which was misconceived for another phenomenon called amok or amuck.
