Abstract:

Probably every historian has heard it said--or even repeated it a number of times -- that "history is not the story of mankind but of certain men." Or put in broader terms, "History is not the story of the human race but of certain people." Like most short and catchy phrases, this statement is at once fairly accurate and somewhat misleading. At the same time, though, it might be a good summary of the first two volumes of James MacGregor Burns' The American Experiment.
